Gothic bat tattoos

A bat tattoo is one of the simplest ways to wear gothic: a creature of night, crypts and belfries, tied to Dracula in the West and to good fortune in China. It can be as small as a fingertip or as wide as your chest.

Why the bat belongs to gothic

Bats live where gothic imagination lives: caves, crypts, church towers and ruined buildings, appearing at dusk and gone by dawn. The phrase “bats in the belfry” captures the picture well enough. When goth grew out of the London post-punk scene, its most famous club, which opened in 1982, was called the Batcave.

The bat is also one of the easiest gothic motifs to tattoo. Its outline is instantly recognizable even as a solid black shape a centimeter wide, and its spread wings make a natural symmetrical design. That is why so many small gothic tattoos are bats.

Where bat symbolism comes from

Medieval Europe. In medieval and Renaissance art, angels have feathered bird wings and demons often have the leathery wings of bats. That visual convention, more than anything bats actually do, gave the animal its sinister reputation in the West. The bat also appears in the Book of Leviticus among the creatures not to be eaten, and in one of Aesop’s fables it switches sides between the birds and the beasts and ends up trusted by neither.

Vampire bats. Three species of bat feed on blood, all of them in Central and South America. The European vampire legend already existed when naturalists described these bats, and the animals were named after it, not the other way round.

Dracula. In Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel the Count takes the shape of a bat, among other forms. Stage and film adaptations, from the 1931 Bela Lugosi film onward, made the bat at the window the shorthand for a vampire. Bauhaus’s 1979 single “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” is often called the first goth record, and the bat came along with that whole Dracula iconography. See the vampire page for the full story.

China. In Chinese art the bat is a lucky symbol, because its name, fu, sounds like the word for good fortune. Five bats together stand for the five blessings, and bats appear on Chinese ceramics, textiles and carved woodwork for exactly that reason. If you like the idea of a bat that is gothic in shape and auspicious in meaning, this is a real tradition to draw on.

Anatomy. The scientific name for bats, Chiroptera, means hand wing. A bat’s wing is a hand, with very long finger bones and skin stretched between them. That is why the bat skeleton is such a striking tattoo: it shows a hand turned into a wing.

What a bat tattoo means today

Today a bat is often read as being at home in the dark, as intuition and finding your way when you can’t see, and as a nod to horror cinema and Halloween. Some people wear it as a rebirth symbol, for coming out of a cave and into the night air. Others choose it for the Chinese good fortune meaning. Many just want a small, cute, unmistakably goth tattoo.

  • Bat with wings spread, symmetrical. The emblem version, ideal for the throat, chest or the back of the hand.
  • Bat hanging upside down from a branch. A vertical design that suits the ankle, the wrist, or the inside of the arm.
  • Bat flying across a full moon. A circular composition for the shoulder or forearm. The crescent moon page has more moon designs.
  • Bat skeleton with outstretched wing bones. The finger bones fan out like a lace fan. It needs size and clean spacing.
  • Bat with lace-patterned wings. Victorian lace filling the wing membrane, one of the most popular gothic tattoo ideas for women. The lace page covers how much pattern fits at each size.
  • Small cute bat with folded wings. Round, friendly and tiny. A good first tattoo.
  • Vampire bat with bared fangs. The horror version, best in black and grey with a red accent on the fangs.

Styles that suit a bat

Blackwork is where bats shine. A solid black bat has nothing that can blur, so it looks the same in twenty years as it does on day one. Our blackwork designs show bats from tiny to large.

Fine-line bats need an outline and the wing bones, with the membrane left open or lightly shaded. Dotwork suits the membrane well: stippled shading reads as thin, translucent skin. Etching is the natural choice for a bat skeleton, recalling old anatomy prints. Black and grey realism gives fur and texture to a vampire bat’s face. Red accent should stay small: fangs, a drop of blood, or a red moon behind a black bat.

Placement and size

Design Practical minimum Good spots
Solid silhouette about 1 in wrist, ankle, behind the ear, finger
Bat with wing bones drawn 2.5 to 3 in forearm, shoulder, back of the hand
Lace-wing bat 3 to 4 in throat, sternum, upper back
Bat skeleton 4 in or more chest, upper back, forearm
Bat across a moon 3 to 4 in circle shoulder, outer forearm, calf

A spread-wing bat is wide and short, which makes it one of the few gothic motifs that fits the throat without distortion. Our neck designs show how the wings follow the jaw line. For tiny bats, a scatter of three to five across a collarbone or shoulder blade gives movement without asking any single bat to hold detail.

Things to watch out for

The Batman problem. A symmetrical, solid black bat with straight, pointed wings, especially inside an oval, reads as the Batman logo. If that is not what you want, give the wings irregular scalloped edges, show the head and ears clearly, or add a little texture.

Wing bone spacing. The finger bones in a bat wing meet at the wrist. If they are drawn too close together there, they merge into a black wedge within a few years. Ask your artist to keep at least a couple of millimeters of skin between them at the joint.

Using the prompts

Every bat in the gallery is an AI concept with its ChatGPT prompt shown. Copy it, change “lace-patterned wings” to “bat skeleton” or the style to dotwork, and see what comes out. Then let a tattoo artist redraw your favorite: AI bats often get the wing anatomy wrong, with too many fingers or membranes that attach in odd places.

Questions people ask

What does a bat tattoo mean?

In gothic culture a bat usually stands for the night, the hidden side of things and a love of horror and the macabre. Other popular readings include intuition and finding your way in the dark, from echolocation, and rebirth, from bats emerging from caves at dusk. In Chinese tradition the bat is a symbol of good fortune.

Is a bat tattoo good luck?

In Chinese art, yes. The word for bat, fu, sounds like the word for good fortune, and a group of five bats represents the five blessings, often listed as long life, wealth, health, virtue and a peaceful death. In European tradition the bat was more often linked with darkness and demons.

Why are bats linked with vampires?

The vampire legend came first. When Europeans encountered blood-feeding bats in Central and South America, they named them vampire bats after the existing folklore. Bram Stoker then had Count Dracula take the form of a bat in his 1897 novel, and horror films cemented the link.

How big should a bat tattoo be?

A solid bat silhouette can be as small as 1 inch. A bat with visible wing bones or lace patterns needs about 3 inches across, and a bat skeleton needs 4 inches or more so the finger bones in the wings don't run together.

Is a small bat a good first tattoo?

Yes. A small blackwork bat is quick, usually costs no more than a shop minimum, and holds its shape well because it is mostly solid black. The wrist, ankle, behind the ear and the side of a finger are common spots.
